Choosing a hardware wallet for your crypto assets is one of the most important steps in your crypto journey. This is why I review here all the best devices currently on the market and today I have the latest product by SecuX, the Shield Bio card-sized cold wallet that is a direct competitor to Cypherock X1, Tangem and CoolWallet Pro.

Let’s dive into the specifics of this smart card cold wallet and see if it’s the right one for you. I’ll go through its features, security, user experience, supported blockchains and I’ll show you how the setting up process goes, so you get a complete guide here, that will help you in your decision making.

Overview:

Shield-Bio is another card-size hardware wallet, which is one of the newest products on the market by the renowned brand SecuX.
I also have reviewed their previous devices and I’ve been using card-size wallets for a couple of years now and I must say, this is currently my most preferred format for day-to-day, on the go use. And because I travel 9 months of the year, convenience and portability comes to the forefront. The Secure element here is with certification CC EAL5+, which is not the latest, but it is the most commonly used chip in the majority of the devices on the market and most of the competition currently is with that chip. The screen makes it even more secure when sending money, because you get to see and confirm the wallet address on its own screen to make sure there’s no error or mis-match. I like that you’re using a dedicated app on your phone to navigate the wallet. I prefer that but you can also choose to navigate it through Wallet Connect or Metamask, which are both integrated. I have to point out the fingerprint sensor. This is used for signing transactions, and you have a 4-digit pin too, so all the necessary steps for extra security are present and I am happy with that.

The device generates a seed phrase and you choose between 12 or 24 words seed. There’s even a battery which I have no idea how it fits in such a thin paper-light card, but it’s there and you charge it with its own attachment and a micro USB cable.

If I have to think of anything to criticize, it would be the micro USB cable since we’re rapidly moving towards USB-C. This means I still have to carry around a micro usb cable with me when I travel – it’s not a big deal, but I would have preferred a USB-C just for convenience.

The other thing that bothered me (it might be fixed soon) is that the mobile app didn’t connect to that device because I already linked it with my V20 (another device by the same brand). Since I have 2 phones, I just installed the app on my other phone and linked the app with this device, which works fine, but it makes me think that it doesn’t link to more than 1 device, which I want to see improved. Other than that, I find it to be a very good product.

Design & Build

Very compact, thin and lightweight, ideal for travelling. Hands-on Clear-sign, NFT support, E-ink display, battery. Navigation via a Mobile App and really easy to set up.

Security

Security chip certified CC EAL 5+ combined with biometric fingerprint sensor and pin code. Biometric fingerprint authentication provides a significantly higher level of security compared to traditional methods, they are much harder to compromise compared to PINs or passwords, which can be guessed, stolen, or shared unintentionally.

Compatibility

Backup Seed compatible with industry standards BIP-32, 39, 44. Choice between 12 and 24 words seed phrase.

App & Asset Management

This device is navigated via a mobile app (both Android and IOS are supported). The token support is massive: 10,000+ coins and tokens are supported, which is every major blockchain and its tokens.

Pricing

Priced at $149.00 (less if you use my discount link below) it’s on the more expensive side compared to Tangem, but same price as CoolWallet Pro, so it’s a standard price for its category.

IN SUMMARY:

So, to recap, what do I like about this device and what I feel needs some improvement:

PROS

  • Biometric authentication (Fingerprints are much harder to compromise compared to PINs or passwords, which can be guessed, stolen, or shared unintentionally.
  • 10,000+ coins/tokens supported.
  • PIN entry enabled
  • E-ink display (easy to read)
  • NFT support.
  • Mobile iOS / Android
  • WalletConnect & MetaMask integration (QR-based)

CONS:

  • Charging cable is micro-USB (in an age when USB-C is fast becoming the universal standard).
  • Multiple accounts are not possible with this device. With other wallets, I sometimes create multiple accounts, so if I’m at risk in any way, I would open the secondary account with less money in it, but this is not possible here.
  • The mobile App seems to be working with one device only and since I have other SecuX devices, I had to install the App on my second phone to link it with this device.
  • Security chip is Certified CC EAL5+ while other devices already use EAL6+

But none of these are big drawbacks really. Especially for someone who is new to crypto, this will be ideal as it has less things to confuse you or complicate the user experience. Definitely a good thing in this regard.
