Is Ethereum’s Supply Capped? What Does It Mean?

Ok, so The Supply of Ethereum is not capped. This is the short answer to the question from the title of this video, but this is only half of the picture. There’s more to it.
You probably already knew this from just looking at the quick stats about the cryptocurrency that you will find on any good data aggregator, like Coingecko for instance.

Right now Ethereum’s circulating supply is almost 120 million tokens. For your reference, during the 2014 Ethereum ICO, the total supply of Ether was about 72 million – almost half of what it is today. And then there’s the maximum supply, which for many coins or tokens is a fixed number. Not for Ether though. It shows as “infinity” – in other words, no fixed supply, no cap.
But does that mean that one day we could have billions of Ether in circulation?
Well, not quite.
In today’s episode of Crypto Corner I take a deep dive into the Ethereum’s monetary policy, the latest upgrades (like EIP 1559 and The Merge) and I give you my answer to the question about Ethereum’s lack of max. supply cap and why this isn’t a problem.

I also discuss the deflationary model of Ethereum and how The Merge (the latest upgrade, scheduled for Sept 19) will greatly affect the production of new tokens and subsequently, the value of ETHER on the market.
