Crypto Wallets at Risk: $5M Stolen in ‘Ill Bloom’ Flaw

A critical vulnerability dubbed the “Ill Bloom” flaw has exposed thousands of cryptocurrency wallets to theft by exploiting weak recovery phrases. Attackers have drained approximately $5 million from hundreds of accounts, and wallets on major blockchains remain at risk.

What Is the Ill Bloom Flaw?

The Ill Bloom vulnerability arises from insecure random number generation used during the creation of recovery phrases (seed phrases) in certain software wallets. Instead of producing truly unpredictable seed phrases, flawed randomness allowed attackers to predict or narrow down possible combinations, making affected wallets easier to brute force.

This is not a phishing scam, smart-contract exploit, or breach of blockchain networks like Bitcoin or Ethereum. The weakness exists at the wallet generation level, meaning that any wallet created with these flawed seeds remains vulnerable regardless of updates or re-importing.

Scale of the Breach

• As of June 30, 2026, 2,114 active addresses were identified across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron, Rootstock, and Polygon, with additional exposure noted on Solana.
• A coordinated attack on May 27, 2026, drained 431 accounts totaling $3.14 million.
• Public trackers now estimate over $5 million in total losses, with more affected wallets still being uncovered.

Which Wallets Are Affected?

Coinspect’s investigation suggests that hardware wallets are not affected, as their seed generation uses secure, isolated randomness. The primary risk lies with users of lesser-known mobile software wallets, though Coinspect has not publicly named the specific apps involved.

Crucially, most mainstream software wallets do not appear vulnerable, but the investigation remains ongoing.

How to Protect Yourself

Coinspect has released an address-checking tool to help users determine if their wallets may be part of the exposed set. If your wallet is flagged:

• Do not reuse or re-import the same recovery phrase.
• Generate a new wallet using a trusted, secure source of randomness.
• Move funds to the new wallet, ideally with assistance from your wallet provider or a security expert.
• Be cautious when moving funds, as attackers may monitor gas tokens on affected chains.

Wider Implications

The Ill Bloom flaw underscores a systemic issue in wallet security: the seed phrase is only as secure as the randomness used to generate it. This incident joins a growing list of wallet security breaches, including smart contract exploits and malicious approval scams, but differs by targeting the foundation of wallet security itself.

As the investigation continues, users are urged to stay vigilant, regularly review wallet security practices, and consider migrating to wallets with audited, secure randomness.
