Crypto has always lived at the intersection of permissionless money and regulated financial infrastructure. For years, most threats were predictable: stolen private keys, hacked exchanges, phishing attempts, compromised devices. But 2026 introduced a new kind of attack that flips the entire security model on its head.
It’s an attack that doesn’t require your password, your seed phrase or access to your wallet.
It doesn’t require malware. It doesn’t require social engineering. It doesn’t even require stealing anything from you, it works by sending you money.
Tiny amounts. Pennies. Sometimes less. We call them DUST. And it can freeze your exchange account.
When receiving money becomes the danger
Bitcoin was built so nobody can stop you from receiving funds. That’s a core feature of permissionless systems. Regulated exchanges are now discovering the uncomfortable flip side: nobody can stop someone from sending you funds either.
In August 2026, Kraken reported thousands of unsolicited micro‑transactions hitting addresses associated with its customers. These transfers came from wallets linked to sanctioned exchange HTX. HTX denied intentionally initiating them, but the effect was immediate: some Kraken accounts were temporarily restricted while compliance systems investigated the exposure.
Most transfers were worth only a few cents or dollars. Roughly 12,000 of them arrived between August 17 and August 24. That was enough to trigger automated AML flags across unrelated accounts.
This wasn’t a glitch, but a preview. Someone discovered a new form of financial denial‑of‑service attack. Instead of flooding a server with packets, you flood wallets with compliance risk.
The victims don’t lose money. They lose access. Welcome to the age of the Compliance DoS attack.
Why this attack works
Compliance systems don’t care about intent. They care about exposure.
If a wallet receives funds that previously touched sanctioned entities, darknet markets, mixers or high‑risk infrastructure, the receiving wallet inherits that risk score. Even microscopic amounts can contaminate an otherwise clean wallet.
This is similar to dusting attacks, but now weaponized for compliance disruption instead of phishing. The attacker doesn’t need sophistication. They only need a few cents and a list of target addresses.
And because regulated exchanges must follow AML and sanctions rules, they have no choice but to investigate or restrict accounts that suddenly show exposure.
This is the first attack in crypto history where giving someone money can lock them out of their own account.
The uncomfortable truth: you cannot prevent incoming tainted funds
You cannot stop someone from sending you Bitcoin or any other crypto for that matter.
You cannot stop someone from sending you dust. In fact, every time I use a TRC20 (USDT mostly) token, I get dust. And it’s a lot. At least 4-5 transactions. Tron is currently the most spammed network out there.
Permissionless systems do not allow opt‑out. That means the only defence is screening. You need to know the risk level of your wallets before you transact, before you withdraw, before you send funds to an exchange and before you accept payments from clients.
This is exactly why I screen every wallet I use. After I had several rejected transactions from notable exchanges I use, I realised that I have to start checking my wallets, my cold wallets in particular, because there’s no third party to alert me if I receive tainted coins (marked as risky due to illicit activities from the senders).
The tool I rely on to stay safe
Because I am dealing with customers from all over the world and receiving crypto on a daily basis, I need a fast and affordable way to check wallet risk before sending or receiving crypto. I tested multiple AML tools and eventually settled on AMLBot, which I now use daily.
A few reasons why it works well for me:
- It’s the cheapest AML screening tool I’ve found. Pricing starts around $0.20 to $0.30 per check depending on volume.
- No subscription and no KYC. You can run checks instantly without onboarding friction.
- Supports major chains. BTC, ETH and several others commonly used for payments.
- Clear risk scoring. You get a simple low, medium or high rating with a breakdown of suspicious connections.
- Web interface is straightforward. You paste an address, run the check and get results in seconds.
For individuals, freelancers and small teams, AMLBot hits the sweet spot. It’s fast, inexpensive and gives you enough detail to avoid accidental exposure. It’s not an enterprise compliance suite, but it’s exactly what you need to avoid becoming collateral damage in a Compliance DoS attack.
If you want to try it, the web version is here: amlbot.com.

Why screening matters more than ever
The Kraken incident wasn’t an isolated event. It was a warning.
As regulators tighten AML enforcement, exchanges and payment processors will rely even more heavily on automated risk scoring. That means:
- unsolicited tainted funds can trigger account freezes
- dusting attacks can escalate into compliance investigations
- wallets interacting with DEXs, bridges or relaxed‑KYC platforms may inherit risk
- freelancers and businesses receiving crypto payments are especially vulnerable
You cannot control who sends you money. You can control how prepared you are.
Screening your wallets is now basic crypto hygiene, just like using cold storage or protecting your seed phrase.
The Bottom Line
Crypto has always promised freedom. But as the ecosystem matures, compliance becomes the gatekeeper to that freedom. The Compliance DoS attack shows that risk doesn’t always come from hackers. Sometimes it comes from the very structure of permissionless money.
If you handle crypto regularly, especially if you receive payments from clients or unknown wallets, start screening now. It costs almost nothing and it can save you from waking up to a frozen exchange account because someone sent you $0.01.
