If you’ve been in crypto long enough, chances are you’ve crossed paths with the Ledger Nano S — the OG cold wallet that helped millions of users secure their digital assets. But as of June 2025, Ledger has officially pulled the plug on Nano S support. No more firmware updates. No new app integrations. And while the device technically still works, it’s now skating on thin ice when it comes to future compatibility and security. Not to mention the controversial firmware upgrade to the Nano X and subsequent models, that allows for seed phrase extraction (with your permission, of course… but for how long?).

So what does this mean for you — the everyday crypto holder who just wants to keep their coins safe?

🔍 What’s Changing?

Ledger’s announcement marks the end of an era. The Nano S, once a staple in hardware wallet recommendations, is now considered obsolete due to its limited memory and inability to support newer blockchain apps. While emergency patches may still be issued until 2026, regular updates are done. That means:

  • No support for new coins or token standards
  • Increased risk of bugs or incompatibility with future forks
  • No fixes for non-critical vulnerabilities

Ledger is nudging users toward the Nano S Plus or Nano X, offering discounts to ease the transition. But let’s be real — not everyone is keen on these models, and the main reason being that Ledger introduced that update we all dreaded – the ability to extract one’s seed from the device – something no OG Bitcoiner wants to hear of, much less, make use of. This was aimed at attracting new users and creating residual income by charging subscription fees for life. Seemed good for business, but not great for privacy and anonymity. And thus, most OGs are migrating to other brands, myself included.

What Are Your Options?

If you’re still using a Nano S, here’s what you need to know:

  • Your funds are safe as long as you have your 24-word recovery phrase.
  • You can restore your wallet on any BIP39-compatible device — not just Ledger.
  • It’s time to plan your migration. Don’t wait until a critical bug locks you out.

And if you’re shopping for a replacement, there’s more out there than just Ledger. In the Wallets section of this blog you will find all the good cold wallets that I have reviewed over the years, starting with the latest devices and moving towards some slightly older ones.

I’m currently using several devices, which I will briefly point out here, but feel free to explore all the devices I reviewed to find the right one for you. Next on my list is the The official name of the product is the SecuX Shield BIO. It’s a biometric card-style crypto wallet that features advanced fingerprint authentication and a CC EAL5+ certified secure chip — designed for ultra-portable, high-security cold storage.

Tangem Wallets — Wearable & Card-Based Cold Storage for the Mobile Era

Tangem was the first brand that came up with the credit-card format for a cold wallet and revolutionised the way we use and carry our crypto wallets. They come in packs of 2 or 3 cards, where one is the main device and the other(s) act as backups, in case you lose one. Simple, easy to use, hassle free and with a lot of functionality. The Tangem Card Wallets are the flagship product that put Tangem on the map, but they also offer a wearable ring format, which I am also using and for traveling it’s my ultimate device. Mainly because it’s so inconspicuous, nobody suspects that I’m carrying hundreds of thousands of $$ on my finger.

In fact, the Tangem Ring is the world’s first wearable crypto wallet, combining minimalist design with military-grade security. It’s embedded with a CC EAL6+ secure chip, and uses NFC tap-to-sign technology to authorize transactions via the Tangem app. No seed phrase required — your private key is generated and stored inside the ring itself. You also get a couple of cards as backups, so you’re not at danger of losing everything if the ring goes missing. Like the Ring, the Tangem Card wallet is air-gapped, seedless, and built to last over 25 years.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison:

Both wallets support staking, swaps, and dApp access via WalletConnect, and have been independently audited by Kudelski Security and Riscure.

Last but not least, here’s the third brand I use that also offers a card-size wallet:

SecuX Shield BIO — Biometric Cold Storage in Your Back Pocket

The SecuX Shield BIO, like the previous two models is a credit card-sized crypto wallet but it adds a futuristic twist to cold storage: biometric fingerprint authentication. Designed for users who want maximum security without bulky hardware.

At $59, it’s one of the most affordable wallets with biometric security, making it a standout for both newcomers and seasoned holders.

Here’s why it’s gaining traction:

FeatureSecuX Shield BIO
Form FactorCredit card-sized (fits in wallet)
SecurityCC EAL5+ secure chip + fingerprint authentication
SetupNFC tap-to-sign via SecuX Mobile App
Compatibility10,000+ tokens across major blockchains

DisplayBuilt-in screen for transaction verification
BatteryPassive NFC (no charging required)
Price$59

What sets the Shield BIO apart is its screen-based confirmation — no blind signing, no guesswork. You see exactly what you’re approving before you tap, which adds a layer of transparency that many card-style wallets lack.

It’s ideal for users who want tap-and-go simplicity, biometric protection, and visual verification — all without compromising portability. Whether you’re upgrading from a Nano S or just want a wallet that feels like it belongs in 2025, the Shield BIO is a smart, secure choice.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Wait to Upgrade

The end of Nano S support isn’t just a technical footnote — it’s a wake-up call. If you’re serious about self-custody, now’s the time to reassess your setup. Whether you go with Ledger’s newer models or explore alternatives like the ELLIPAL X Card, the key is to stay ahead of the curve.

Crypto doesn’t wait. Neither should you.
