So, you’ve been very careful with your cryptocurrency investments. You’ve researched the best hardware wallets, set strong passwords, and enabled two-factor authentication. But there’s one critical step you might be overlooking:
Your hardware wallet is only as safe as your seed phrase. You know that, right?
If someone finds your hardware wallet they probably won’t be able to use it – without your password, they can’t unlock it. But if they find your seed phrase… it’s end game.

In this article I give you my best choice to solve the vulnerability of traditional paper seed phrase storage by using a simple solution: metal plates. It’s the last step to fully protect yourself against the risks of ever losing your crypto, so don’t skip this. 

Your seed phrase is a set of words that you must write down and keep in a safe place. If you ever lose your hardware wallet or it gets damaged, you can use your seed phrase to recover your funds. But here’s the thing: if someone else gets hold of your seed phrase, they can access your funds just as easily as you can. This is the one thing about hardware wallets that can lead to loss of all your crypto. Having your seed phrase means that even if your device malfunctions, or is stolen, broken, lost… you can always use that seed phrase with another device and still access all your crypto, so protecting the seed phrase is in fact more important than the device itself. Many people forget that, or just don’t know that. I keep getting emails from people who lost their seed phrase or it got damaged, so they’re in trouble.

I had an old device that malfunctioned some time ago, so I had to use my seed phrase and import it into a new device, which is how I managed to access my crypto. I was holding several Bitcoin and a lot of Ether in there, so imagine my frustration when the device froze during a major firmware upgrade. It just got stuck at the last step of the upgrade and hours passed, but nothing happened. Even days later I was not able to make it work, so eventually I had to accept that I won’t be using it anymore. But without my seed phrase, those coins would have not been able to be accessed. That’s the only thing I needed. Not the device but the seed phrase.
That’s why it’s so important to store your seed phrase in the most secure way. And one of the best ways to do that is by using metal plates. Some people even lock these in bank vaults.

Metal plates are durable, fire-resistant, and tamper-proof. You can stamp your seed phrase onto a metal plate using a kit like this one, and then keep it in a safe or other secure location. And because metal plates don’t degrade over time like paper does, you can be confident that your seed phrase will be readable and intact when you need it.

This makes them the ideal material for storing your seed phrase, and protect it from all types of physical damage.

The OneKey titanium metal plate is compatible with all BIP39-standard seed phrases, which are used by almost all hardware wallets nowadays. Each plate measures 2.2 inches by 3.5 inches, which is about a quarter the size of a credit card, and has a thickness of 0.05 inches. The plate has space for 24 words, which is the standard length for a BIP39 seed phrase – this means one each plate you can store 1x 24-word seed or 2x 12-word seeds.

To use the OneKey titanium metal plate, you simply need to punch or engrave your seed phrase onto the plate using a hammer and the punch engraving tool that comes with the kit.

The BIP39 guide, which comes with this kit has a list of all the words that are used for seed phrase generation. Each word has a number and you are stamping that number on the plate, so even if someone finds it, they will not see your words, but just random dots on the plate. This way, you have an added protection for your secret seed. You can see what this means in the video, so you get a better idea what I’m talking about.
