There’s a harsh reality that most people in crypto don’t learn until it’s too late: if you lose your seed phrase, you lose everything. There are no second chances. No password reset links. No friendly support teams to call. Just a cold, irreversible loss of access.
If you’re serious about self-custody, then protecting your seed phrase should be your top priority. And yet, many people still scribble it on paper, snap a photo with their phone, and even worse: save it in a file on the cloud.
All of these might seem convenient, but they’re also ticking time bombs. Fires, floods, hackers, nosy roommates—all it takes is one bad moment to wipe out years of savings.
That’s why I keep talking about metal plates, indestructible storage. Like these I have here, by Xelox.

At its core, the Yokis is a metal plate, by Xellox, designed to store your crypto seed phrase safely and permanently. It’s not flashy, and that’s kind of the point. This is a product built for durability, not decoration. Made from high-grade stainless steel, it’s meant to endure the very things that would destroy traditional backups—fire, water, corrosion, and time.
You don’t just write your seed phrase on this. You engrave it. Or stamp it. Or lock in lettered tiles, depending on the model. The Yokis uses this engraving tool. The idea is to physically imprint your recovery words into metal so they don’t fade, burn, or dissolve with age. This isn’t just a backup—it’s your crypto insurance policy.
Why Metal? Why Not Just Use a Password Manager or a Notebook?
Because seed phrases aren’t passwords. They are the keys to the vault. And vault keys need to survive disasters.
Think about this: if your house caught fire right now, would your seed phrase survive? If your hard drive failed or your cloud account got hacked, would your funds still be recoverable? Digital methods are inherently vulnerable, and paper—while offline—isn’t exactly built to last.
Metal, on the other hand, doesn’t care about your environment. It won’t rot, mold, or erase. It’ll still be legible a hundred years from now, long after your USB stick or notebook has turned to dust.
And the Yokis uses high grade stainless steel that’s resistant to extreme heat, rust, and pressure. We’re talking survivalist level hardware here, not cheap gimmicks.
Included in the kit is a high-quality electric engraver that simplifies the marking process, making it as easy as writing on paper. This method ensures clear, durable results without the hassle of loose tiles or the risk of damage from hammering. I wasn’t sure at first, how easy this would be, but to my surprise, it was a walk in the park. It took me 3-4 minutes to inscribe my 12 words seed and each plate can fit 24 words, so I can store two 12-word seeds on one plate. Yokis is also tested to withstand 9mm bullets and has a melting point of 2642°F (1450°C), providing bulletproof protection and surviving unforeseen threats. Indestructible indeed.
Compatibility
The Yokis supports the industry standard BIP39 seed phrases which is used by 90% of the hardware wallet brands today. There’s another standard, called SLIP39 and it’s quite rare, some Trezor models use that, but overall, BIP39 is the one most commonly applied. I use several hardware wallets and all of them are based on the BIP39, so they’re all covered.
And there’s another user-friendly feature: you only need to encode the first four letters of each word. That’s because BIP39 only needs those first four letters to distinguish each word from the others. It’s more secure, more efficient, and just as reliable.
What I like about Xellos Yokis is that it doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It just makes the wheel fireproof.
This Isn’t Just for Hardcore Bitcoin Maxis
You don’t have to be a privacy-obsessed maximalist with a Faraday cage and a VPN stack to benefit from a product like this. If you hold any amount of crypto that you’re not willing to lose—whether it’s a few hundred dollars in a MetaMask wallet or your entire retirement in cold storage—then a durable seed phrase backup is a no-brainer.
People tend to overestimate the safety of digital storage and underestimate the risks of physical loss. But the truth is: real-world threats are more common than we think. A flood. A theft. A simple mistake. You want your crypto to be around long after the current hype cycle is over. You want a legacy.
In crypto, there’s no room for “maybe.” You either have your keys, or you don’t. You either protect your seed, or you gamble everything on luck.
Xelox Yokis doesn’t just give you a backup—it gives you peace of mind. It’s simple, strong, and built to last. In a space where security is everything, that’s not just an option—it’s a necessity.
So if you’re still keeping your recovery phrase on paper, consider upgrading. Your future self will thank you.
