Overview:

The SafePal X1 is SafePal’s latest open-source Bluetooth hardware wallet, designed to deliver a blend of robust security, user-friendly design, and seamless crypto management for both newcomers and experienced users. With its modern features and focus on mobile-first usability, the X1 is ideal for more frequent, day-to-day usage. Ideal for travelling too, since it’s really compact and lightweight.

Design & Build

The device has a durable matte black ABS and PVC casing, offering a solid feel without being bulky. It has a 1.8-inch monochrome LCD screen with 128×64 resolution and adjustable backlight, providing clear transaction details and easy readability in any lighting condition. The lack of high-res colour screen keeps this wallet in the “under $100 ” bracket, which I like.

Its 12-button keyboard, including a D-pad, allows for intuitive navigation and smooth operation, making it easy to enter PINs, confirm transactions, and manage crypto assets.

Security

Security is at the core of the SafePal X1. The device is equipped with an EAL 5+ certified secure element, providing a high level of tamper resistance similar to that found in smart cards and mission-critical applications. Multiple security sensors and a true random number generator further protect private keys and cryptographic operations. The X1 features a robust anti-tampering self-destruct mechanism: if unauthorized physical access or tampering is detected, the device will automatically wipe all sensitive data, including private keys. This ensures that even if the device falls into the wrong hands, your assets remain secure. Of course, you need to always protect your seed phrase, especially against fire or water hazards, so I would recommend getting their metal plates (or any other brand’s plates) for durable storage. You can refer to my article about this here.

Bluetooth, often seen as a potential vulnerability, is mitigated by SafePal’s rigorous protocol design. The initial pairing between the X1 and SafePal app uses Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) to establish a secure channel, with all subsequent communications protected by AES encryption. Even if data is intercepted during transmission, it remains unreadable without the encryption keys. The X1’s open-source code, available on GitHub, allows independent verification of these security claims, adding transparency and trust.

Compatibility & Connectivity

One of the X1’s headline features is its high-speed Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, which replaces the QR code-based signing method of its predecessor, the S1. This upgrade enables faster, more efficient transaction signing and a streamlined user experience when paired with the SafePal mobile app or browser extension. The X1 supports over 100 blockchains and an unlimited number of tokens, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, TON, SUI, and many more. It also offers multi-language support (currently 10 languages, with more planned), and is compatible with both iOS and Android devices, as well as major desktop platforms.

App & Asset Management

Pairing the device with the SafePal app is straightforward, and all major wallet functions—sending, receiving, swapping, and managing NFTs—are accessible directly through the app. The X1 also serves as a powerful DApp gateway, allowing users to interact with DeFi protocols, yield programs, and cross-chain swaps securely.

In practice, the SafePal X1 delivers a fast and responsive experience. The device’s navigation is smooth, and transaction confirmation is quick, thanks to the efficient Bluetooth signing mechanism. The 200mAh battery lasts several days under regular use and recharges quickly via USB-C. While the battery is smaller than the S1’s, it still provides ample runtime for daily crypto management.

Pricing

It’s one of the cheapest hardware wallets, strategically priced at $69.99. This makes it very affordable and ideal for a frequent user, but equally as good for long term storage too. The X1’s price is a little higher than the S1, reflecting its advanced features and enhanced usability.

Unique Features and Trade-offs

The X1 introduces “hidden-balance” wallets, letting users conceal their true holdings from potential scammers. It also supports firmware upgrades, ensuring ongoing improvements and new features. However, the inclusion of Bluetooth, while greatly enhancing convenience, does introduce a theoretical attack vector not present in fully air-gapped devices like the S1. SafePal addresses this with strong encryption and authentication, but security-conscious users should weigh this trade-off.
But none of these are big drawbacks really. Definitely a good device from my experience.
