What is the Pectra Upgrade?

Pectra is the next major step in Gnosis Chain’s evolution, incorporating changes planned for Ethereum’s own upcoming upgrade (which bundles improvements previously referred to as “Prague” for the execution layer and “Electra” for the consensus layer). By implementing Pectra, Gnosis Chain stays aligned with Ethereum’s roadmap while boosting its own performance and features.

Key Features Coming with Pectra:

The Pectra hard fork bundles several Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Here are some of the highlights Gnosis Chain users, validators, and developers can look forward to:

• EIP-7702 (Set EOA Account Code): A major step towards native account abstraction! This allows regular user accounts (Externally Owned Accounts or EOAs) to temporarily act like smart contracts within a transaction. This opens the door for features like transaction batching, sponsored transactions, and improved wallet security setups without needing complex smart contract wallets initially.
• EIP-7251 (Increase Max Effective Balance): The maximum amount of GNO a single validator can stake effectively will be significantly increased (from 32 up to potentially 2048 GNO). This allows large stakers to consolidate their validators, simplifying operations and potentially reducing overhead. It can also help reduce validator activation queue lengths.
• EIP-7002 (Execution Layer Triggerable Exits): Allows validator withdrawals to be initiated directly from the execution layer (e.g., via smart contracts), offering more flexibility compared to the current consensus-layer-only process.
• EIP-2537 (BLS12-381 Curve Precompile): Adds support for new cryptographic operations, enhancing security and efficiency for things like signature verification and zero-knowledge proofs.
• EIP-7549 (Move Committee Index Outside Attestation): Optimizes how consensus messages (attestations) are handled, potentially leading to faster consensus and a more resilient network.
• EIP-2935 & EIP-6110: Improvements related to storing historical block data and speeding up validator activation times.

What Do You Need to Do?

• Node Operators & Validators (IMPORTANT!): This is critical. You MUST update your execution layer (Nethermind, Erigon, Reth) and consensus layer (Lighthouse, Prysm, Teku, Lodestar, Nimbus) client software to Pectra-compatible versions before the hard fork activates on April 30th at 14:03:40 UTC. Failure to upgrade will result in your node being incompatible with the network after the fork. Check official Gnosis Chain announcements for required client versions.
• Developers: Familiarize yourself with the new capabilities introduced by Pectra, especially EIP-7702, which offers exciting possibilities for wallet and dApp interactions.
• GNO Holders & Regular Users: No specific action is required from you. You can look forward to the potential benefits of a more efficient and capable network.
